One of the most common steps when troubleshooting a PC is to boot into safe mode. For a long time this has been achieved by pressing the F8 key, this all changes with Windows 8 and its Automatic Repair mode. But what if we want Safe Mode?
You can still have Safe Mode, however, it is buried deep into the recovery options of Windows 8. While just mashing the F8 key as we all know will boot you into automatic recovery mode, you can still manually access the recovery options by pressing the Shift+F8 key combination. Even more simple, however, is the option to just hold the SHIFT key and click Restart at the login screen, or even within Windows.
To access safe mode in Windows 8 you first need to get to the “Advanced Startup Menu”
- Hold down Ctrl+Alt+Del (From here you will see a power icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.)
- Press and hold the left shift button.
- While holding the shift button down, click on the power icon and select “Restart” (keep the shift button held down)
- You will now be presented with another menu.
- Choose the “Troubleshoot” option.
- Then choose “Advanced Options”
- Then choose “Windows Startup Settings”
- Confirm that you want to restart to view the advanced startup options.
- The computer will now restart and provide you with a list of options.
- Choose F4 for Safe-Mode and F5 for Safe-mode with basic networking.
